Nacht und Nebel (nicht and fog) low

In the Second World War Nazi administration introduced a decree known as the Nacht und Nebel (Night and Fog) law. (Read, Rethink by G. R. Tylor (Secker and Warburg, 1972), p. 140). By this decree certain persons could be deprived of their identities. Every record concerning them – birth and wedding certificates, insurance policies, and other personal documents – wold be destroyed. Henceforth, they would exist only as numbers. In addition, to prevent them forming close relationships, they wold be constantly on the move from camp to camp. For the unfortunate victim the message was terribly clear: ‘as far as life is concerned you are non-existent; a non-person. You are the living dead and no trace of you will ever remain. ‘” George Carey, I Believe in Man, William B. Ererdmans Publishing Company, Grand Rapids, Michigan, 1997, p. 110.
